OCTOBER 17, 2016 (SAN DIEGO, CA) – Fleet Week San Diego is pleased to announce Captain Larry Blumberg, USN, Ret. as the organization’s new Executive Director.
For 19 years Blumberg served as chairman for one of Fleet Week San Diego’s largest events, the Coronado Speed Festival. This year, Blumberg also spearheaded the return of the spectacular Sea and Air Parade, which included military ship tours, a STEM fair for families, military band performances, and many other activities for active duty sailors, their families, and the community to enjoy. This year’s Fleet Week San Diego festivities drew more than 75,000 spectators.
“A well-known fixture in San Diego’s military and business communities, Larry is the perfect individual to carry forward Fleet Week San Diego’s mission which is to honor those who serve and their families and to enhance relationships between the military and civilian and business communities,” said Captain Dennis DuBard, USN, Ret., president of Fleet Week San Diego. “Larry has long been committed to Fleet Week San Diego as a lead organizer so we are pleased to see him continue in an elevated role.”
In 2015 Blumberg retired as the founding Executive Director of the San Diego Military Advisory Council (SDMAC). He is a past chair of the Military Affairs Advisory Council at the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, and prior to that he served as chair for the Chamber’s 2005 Base Closure and Realignment Subcommittee. He was the 2004 President of the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl, and is currently serving as a Board Member of that organization. He is also a past president of the San Diego Fleet Week Foundation Board of Directors.
About San Diego Fleet Week Foundation
The non-profit, 501(c)(3) foundation was created by community and business leaders who understood the great depth of public support for our Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen. In addition to honoring the military services through the annual Fleet Week San Diego events, the foundation’s goals are to foster awareness of the contributions made by military personnel and their families; to enhance relationships between the civilian, business and military communities; to provide events that military personnel and their families can attend at little or no cost; and to promote other organizations that provide services to military personnel and their families. Fleet Week San Diego is funded solely through the generosity of individuals and corporate contributions. More information is available at the website https://www.fleetweeksandiego.org/support-us/.
