Larry Blumberg

Captain, USN, Ret

Lawrence (Larry) Blumberg retired as a Captain, U.S. Navy, having served as a Surface Warfare Officer in a wide variety of positions ranging from Chief Executive of a major technical center to the first Commanding Officer of a Spruance Class Destroyer, as well as a Destroyer Readiness Squadron where he was responsible for the management and oversight of the major combat systems and command and control modernization of Pacific Fleet Combatant ships. These modernization packages included installation of the Vertical Launched Tomahawk Weapons System, the SQQ-89 Sonar Systems and the Lamps Mk III, as well as other Combat System hardware and software upgrades.

Larry has extensive experience in the operational employment of all major Navy Combat Direction Systems and Command and Control Systems. He was the Director of West Coast Operations for DRS Technical Services Inc until June 2006. Larry had overall responsibility for the 60-plus person San Diego facility, plus satellite offices in Seattle, Washington, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and Yokosouka, Japan. DRS Technical Services principle business areas include Software Development, Systems Integration and Test and Evaluation of U.S. Navy and Department of Defense Hardware and Software Systems. He is currently employed in a part time capacity for DRS.

Larry is currently serving as Executive Director of the San Diego Military Advisory Council, SDMAC, an organization that he helped to found in 2004. He is a past Chair of the Military Affairs Advisory Council of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, and prior to that served as the chair of the 2005 Base Closure and Realignment Sub-Committee of the Chamber. He is also a past President of the Board of Directors of the San Diego Fleet Week Foundation, and a current Board Member. He is a past president of the Point Loma Rotary Club and the San Diego Chapter of the Surface Navy Association. He was the 2004 President of the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl, and is currently serving as a Board Member of that organization. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Iona College, and a master’s degree in Financial Management from the U.S. Navy Post Graduate School. He is married to the former Patricia L. Diehl of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and has two grown daughters and three grandchildren.
